CNC Milling is at the heart of what we do at Presto and we offer 3, 4 and 5 Axis Milling.

Our expertise is in machined aluminium parts – a high proportion of which are visible parts such as front panels and enclosures. We are set up to accommodate batch sizes from 10 to 10,000 with 24/7 automation.

Constant investment in new vertical machining centres together with refinement of our processes means that we achieve high throughput, quality and accuracy for our customers. All our machining centres have 4th Axis capability which enables us to minimise the number of operations and improve accuracy of the component.

In addition to our NFX 380A 5 Axis machining centre, we have 2 x 5 Axis rotary tables helping us to provide our customers with a complete solution to their CNC Milling requirements, including the most complex of machined parts.

High quality traceable raw materials are sourced from European suppliers utilising best-in-class mining and smelting operations for aluminium.

5 Axis Automation

4 Axis Automation

All components are programmed on FeatureCAM® from customer CAD/CAM models. We are able to accept 2D and 3D data in the following formats.

  • ParaSolids (x_t, x_b)

  • Autocad (Dxf, dwg)

  • EZ-MILL (geo)

  • IGES (igs)

  • Acis (sat, sab)

  • Solidworks (sldprt, sldasm)

  • Catia (mod,model)

  • Inventor (ipt,iam)

  • Step (step, stp)

  • Pro/E (prt, asm, xpr, xas)

  • Catia V5 (catpart, catproduct)

  • Solidedge (par, psm, asm)

  • Unigraphics (prt)

  • STL (stl, dmt)

  • PowerSHAPE (ddx, ddz)

All machine programming is completed off line and a comprehensive range of standard tools are kept in all machines to minimise set up time and reduce associated costs.

What is CNC Milling

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) has been incorporated into a variety of technologies and machinery and one of the most common is CNC Milling.

CNC Milling is a specific type of CNC Machining. Milling is a process utilising a cylindrical cutting tool that can rotate in various directions and move along multiple axes. It is capable of creating a wide variety of shapes in both 2D and 3D that will result in a precision part. To form the finished part, the cutting process can be started from a solid block, pre-machined part, casting, forging, or extrusion in a wide variety of materials.

CNC Milling machines are often grouped by the number of axes on which they can operate. Each axis is labelled by letter, where X and Y are used to determine 2D linear moves, Z to control depth and A,B and C axis to control rotary and tilt movements.

CNC Milling machines are available in 3 and 5 axis, where the 3 axis variant is able to have the additional rotary and tilt axis being added as required. Simple parts can be programmed on the machine tool, however it is increasingly common for programming to take place off line with computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technology which can create shapes that are impossible to produce with manual programming techniques.
